Abstract
In this talk, Kenny Harsch will introduce “Teaching and Materials with a Global Englishes Focus,” a website designed as a resource for teachers of English who want to learn about Global Englishes (GE) and infuse it into their classes. GE brings together and adds to the ideas studied by World Englishes (WE), English as a Lingua Franca (ELF), and English as an International Language (EIL), focusing on developing effective multilingual communicators in global contexts. It serves as an antithesis to native speakerism and standard language ideology, which have dominated English language teaching and learning for decades.
The aims of the GE website are (a) to provide easy-to-understand information about GE for an audience of in-service and pre-service teachers (possibly also students, parents, and other stakeholders); (b) to introduce ideas related to GE that have not been discussed in depth in the literature; and (c) to serve as a receptacle with free links to video and audio clips of users of Englishes across the world, as well as free downloads of materials and lesson plans to adapt for classroom use. The audience is encouraged to consider submitting materials to the site.
Kenton Harsch (Kenny), now retired, was formerly Director of the English Language Institute and Undergraduate Coordinator & Advisor in the Department of Second Language Studies at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. His current professional interests include Global Englishes, pedagogical approaches to plagiarism, and language materials development. Since retiring, he has co-authored Beyond plagiarism: Transforming pedagogy to help students write with sources, co-developed the website that is the focus of this talk, and has presented at international conferences on both topics..
