About this talk

TESOLgraphics is a knowledge exchange project funded by Queen’s University Belfast, University of St. Andrews, and ESRC. TESOLgraphics focuses on producing infographic summaries of secondary research in Applied Linguistics and TESOL. ​Secondary research (i.e.., literature reviews and research syntheses) refers to academic publications which summarise research findings of primary studies on the same topic. Secondary research is useful to TESOL practitioners who want to catch a glimpse of the latest development of research and implement evidence-based teaching practices in their classrooms. The TESOLgraphics team aims  to make secondary research easy for ESL, EFL, EAP, ESP, ESOL, EAL, TEFL teachers to read and understand. We do so by producing infographic summaries of selected secondary research which you can finish reading in 5 minutes. 

In this talk, I will introduce the impetus for the project in light of the recent open scholarship movement in Applied Linguistics. Key features of the project will be shared including the usefulness of secondary research in bridging the research-practice divide,, examples of infographics, and future plans of the project.


Dr. Sin-Wang Chong (SFHEA) is Assistant Professor in Applied Linguistics and Language Assessment at Queen’s University Belfast, Affiliated Assistant Professor in TESOL and Academic English at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, and a researcher at the Institute of Education, University College London. Sin-Wang’s research interests include language assessment, computer-assisted language learning, and research synthesis. Sin-Wang is Associate Editor of two SSCI-indexed journals: Innovation in Language Learning and Teaching, and Higher Education Research & Development. Sin-Wang is a Trustee and Executive Committee member of British Association for Applied Linguistics, Convenor and Northern Ireland Regional Representative of British Educational Research Association’s Early Career Researcher Network.
